Somerset Bible Chapel

The Sunday of Thanksgiving Day weekend, as often happens, brought visitors while other regular families were away.

The Announcements were given by Rachel Picard, also Rejean Picard for a Creation Ministries International event for Nov. 15th at the church. Kevin Friesen announced the CMI speakers would also be attending the Men’s Breakfast meeting the next morning.

Emery and Katie DeRoo led the musical items. The hymns chosen for the day were “Jesus Messiah”, “Be Thou My Vision”, “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing”, “His Mercy is More” and, in closing, “Because He Lives”.

Al Dyck was the usher for collection. Kevin Friesen and Clayton Kimber made a 50th Anniversary presentation to Al and Shirley Dyck on the occasion of their milestone October 12th. Kevin then led in a prayer of blessing.

Clayton Kimber led the Prayer Focus. Rachel Picard gave the scripture reading from 1 John 2:15-29.

Abe Klassen continued the series that the men of the church have been leading. One emphasis in this epistle is Family. John writes to encourage believers, local assemblies and families along with related warnings. In this section the warning is to be watchful for those who stray from truth.

Abe noted that in Revelation 19:11-21, all those who give false teachings and find joy in doing evil will be conquered.

Abe pointed out the play on words that John uses. Christ means anointed. The Christians, the people who are identified with Jesus Christ are also called anointed, a term frequently used in 1 John 2: 20-28. Antichrist then means those are opposed to the Truth, the Word of God.

The warnings are to be watchful for those that sound great but draw people away from truth, placing a wedge in the fellowship of believers, splitting the family, the fellowship. In the early days of the nation of Israel, in Numbers 16:1-4, the account of Korah’s rebellion illustrates how such deception could take place.

Christians are to be known by their love for one another. The people we are closest to and know best can be the hardest to love. Abe reminded listeners that Believers are to “Fight for His Name” (Christ).    The benediction was from 1 John 3:1-3.
